Happy 30th birthday, Debian

Published: 2023-08-16

I'm not a Linux distro fanboy nor a distro-hopper, I just use what is reliable.

Today I'll pause for a few minutes because 30 years ago, the Debian GNU/Linux distribution was first released (see the announcement, kindly posted by Lars Wirzenius).

I want to set in stone the moment I switched to Debian before it's forgotten. It was circa 2019 and I was using Ubuntu/eoan, I distinctly remember I was acutely fed up being stuck with an old version of glibc (and maybe other libraries), it was really getting in the way of compiling libraries that my Rust projects needed.

No regrets since then. I use Debian/stable on servers and Debian/testing on my workstations. A "boring" Linux distro that never ever gave me headaches and that just works, providing a solid foundation to build my stuff. In the past I have looked at ArchLinux (or derivatives) or Alpine but they never inspired me enough confidence.

The Debian project is a volunteer-based project and are happy to receive donations.
